Ryan Vis

Ryan Vis is currently enrolled in the Master of Music Performance concentration in Viola at the University of Ottawa under the tutelage of Michael Van Der Sloot in 2022. There he is the Orchestra Manager for the uOttawa Symphony Orchestra, as part of the Teaching Assistant position. He facilitates the social media contributes to the editing of the website.

He is an associate member of the Ottawa Symphony Orchestra, and also for the Orchestre Symphonique de Gatineau. He also subs with the National Arts Centre Orchestra. Ryan also plays with Candlelight Concerts in Ottawa. In the summer of 2022 he was the principal violist of the Orchestre de la Francophonie based in Montreal.

He completed his bachelor’s degree in Viola Performance at the McGill Schulich School of Music in 2022 under the tutelage of Frederic Lambert, and had studio classes with Andre Roy. There he was the principal violist of the McGill Opera, playing Street Scene by Kurt Weill and assistant principal of the McGill Symphony Orchestra playing Souvenir de Florence by Tchaikovsky. Ryan Vis participated in the National Youth Orchestra of Canada in 2019, traveling to Spain and across Canada, 2020 and 2021 online during COVID.

He has dedicated himself to music and education. In 2016 Ryan was the principal violist for the New York State Music Association Conference All-state String Orchestra where they performed in Kodak Hall at the Eastman School of Music. In 2015 to 2017 he was the principal violist for the Empire State Youth Orchestra, performing in Portual and also in the esteemed Carnegie Hall with Maestro Helen Cha-Pyo. In 2015, Ryan was the principal violist of the American Music Abroad Red Tour where they traveled and performed across Europe in France, Germany, Belgium, Switzerland and Austria. 

From 2010 to 2013, Ryan attended the Piano Intesive Study, a summer program, at the Saint Rose School of Music taught and founded by Dr. Young Kim. Before he took lessons with Anne Louise Rizzuto for piano. He was brought up in the Bethlehem Central School District and was principal violist in their Symphony Orchestra conducted by David Beck. During this time he was taught by Beth Bonta Moll and previously Harriet Thomas. He began playing the violin since the age of 8 and was the concert master violin in the middle school orchestra conducted by Jody Van Voris.
